Bithella Bulger, likely Maywood’s oldest resident, has died — one month before her 106th birthday. Her granddaughter, Angela Price, said Bulger died in her sleep on Jan. 15. Price said her grandmother had dementia.

Village Free Press interviewed Price in 2020, when Bulger turned 104. Price said Bulger was born Feb. 25, 1916 in a town near New Orleans, La. Bulger moved to the 800 block of South 21st  Avenue in Maywood in 1962.

Price said that her grandmother was a world traveler who has been to “many European countries, Africa, China, Switzerland … Grandpa didn’t like getting on airplanes, but she was like, ‘See ya!’”

Bulger was also a serial entrepreneur who owned a beauty shop, a restaurant and even a grocery store back in her more active days. But the role Bulger may cherish the most?

“She’s our matriarch,” Price said at the time.

On Tuesday, Price said that Bulger will be cremated. A memorial service for the 105-year-old will likely take place next month, she said.
