Elderly Couple Found Dead Inside Maywood Home After Furnace Malfunction

Monday, October 5, 2020 || By Michael Romain || @maywoodnews

An elderly couple was found unconscious inside of their home on the 1200 block of S. 15th Ave. in Maywood on Oct. 4. They were pronounced dead at 2:27 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Leevell Robinson, 80, and Ora Robinson, 78, died from hyperthermia related to a malfunctioning furnace, the medical examiner said, adding that both had underlying cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension.

The couple’s middle son, Torvis Robinson, 53, said during an interview on Oct. 5, that his parents had noticed problems with the furnace late last week and even had a repairman out to look at it a few days before their deaths.

Torvis said that his brother discovered the married couple unconscious Sunday afternoon, after walking into the house and noticing that it was unusually warm.

Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh said that paramedics transported the couple to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after their son discovered them.

Torvis said his father was retired from International Harvester and had been in Maywood “before I was born.” They had three children and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he said.

“They enjoyed retirement,” said Torvis, who was still at a loss for words on Oct. 5. “This is still hard to process.”

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the coroner listed hypothermia as the cause of death; instead of hyperthermia. This post has since been corrected. VFP regrets the error.
