The Illinois State Police (ISP) are investigating an expressway shooting that resulted in serious injuries to three Maywood residents, including one teenager.

The reported shooting took place on Aug. 13, at approximately 8:34 p.m. on Interstate 290 eastbound, west of Damen Avenue in Chicago, the police said.

“ISP officers responded to a local area hospital after being notified the hospital was treating three gunshot victims,” according to a report the ISP released over the weekend. “Preliminary reports indicate a victim vehicle was traveling at the above location when the shooting occurred.”

Three Maywood residents — the driver, a 21-year-old male; a passenger, a 21-year-old-female; and another passenger, a 17-year-old male juvenile — sustained life-threatening injuries.

The police said a second vehicle at the scene of the shooting had damage resulting from gunfire, but the driver was not injured.

At approximately 10:13 p.m., police diverted all eastbound traffic off to the ramp at Western Avenue as law enforcement authorities investigated.

Expressway shootings on the rise

The shooting that happened on Aug. 13 is just the latest in a long string of incidents that have happened recently, as WGN Investigates reports:

“WGN Investigates obtained data from the Illinois State Police that show the number of shootings on Chicago area expressways more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, jumping from 52 to 128.

“And even after the surge in gunfire last year, the number of shootings on area expressways continues to climb in 2021. Through mid-July, the ISP tallied 133 shootings on local highways.

“In those 261 shootings that occurred over the last 18 months, ISP has made 25 arrests and considers 44 of those cases ‘closed.'”
