Maywood community members are mourning two elected officials who died this month: former village trustee Ronald “Ron” Rivers and sitting library trustee Connie Tapia.

Rivers, who served on the Maywood Board of Trustees for two terms from 2011 to 2019, died on Dec. 15. He was 73. Maywood Mayor Nathaniel George Booker announced Rivers’ death in a Facebook statement on Dec. 18. No cause of death was given.

“A life that touches others goes on forever,” Booker wrote.

Rivers served as trustee during the administrations of former mayors Henderson Yarbrough and Edwenna Perkins.

Earlier in his life, he attended Hirsch High School in Chicago before serving in the U.S. Army. After he was honorably discharged, he attended Kennedy-King Community College, where he studied social service and communications, according to an online biography.

Rivers worked 32 years at three different airlines in airline catering and customer service, before retiring in 1999. He was first elected to the Maywood Board of Trustees in 2011, having run on Yarbrough’s Maywood United Party slate.

Rivers was an active member of the Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood, the director of field operations for the Proviso Township Democratic Organization (PTDO) and the president of the 600-900 S. 2nd Ave. block club, among other civic responsibilities he held over the course of his life.

Rivers was married to his wife, longtime District 89 school board member Regina Rivers, for roughly 40 years. They had six children, according to the biography.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, the chairwoman of the PTDO and Henderson’s wife, called Rivers a “friend” and “America’s son.”

A visitation for Rivers is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Wallace Broadview Funeral Home, 2020 Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview.

The wake and funeral service will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., respectively, at New Horizon Baptist Church, 1600 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood.

Rivers will be interred on Dec. 29, 1 p.m., at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W Hoff Rd. in Elwood, Ill.

Connie Tapia, Maywood library board secretary, dies at 72

Maywood Public Library District Trustee Connie Tapia died on Dec. 8. Her death was confirmed by Stan Huntington, the library’s executive director, in an email statement released Dec. 22. She was 72, according to public records.

Huntington said Tapia died after a “brief illness,” adding that Tapia served on the library’s trustee board from 1995 to 2007. In 2017, Tapia won another term on the board and was serving as the board’s secretary at the time of her death.

In his statement, Huntington said that Tapia “was a lifelong resident of the village of Maywood” and a “dedicated patron of the Maywood Public Library who will be greatly missed.”

No information on Tapia’s funeral and/or memorial services was given.
