After Residents Register Support, Broadview OKs Cannabis Sales

Saturday, December 7, 2019 || By Michael Romain || @maywoodnews

During a regular meeting on Dec. 2, the Broadview Board of Trustees voted unanimously to amend the village’s zoning code to allow for the sale and processing of recreational cannabis, which will become legal for residents in Illinois over the age of 21 on Jan. 1. Trustee Judy Miller was absent.

The board vote happened a few weeks after state Sen. Kimberly Lighford (4th) and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson co-hosted a town hall meeting on cannabis legalization. During the meeting, held Nov. 19 inside of Broadview’s council chambers, 2350 S. 25th Ave., nearly 50 people took an electronic survey to register their opinions about cannabis legalization. Most of them were in support of legalization and, in particular, the sale of cannabis in Broadview.

Thirty-two were “very supportive” of recreational marijuana sales in Broadview while three were “somewhat supportive,” two were “not supportive” and 11 said they needed more information. Forty-one respondents said they were in support of cannabis legalization, in general. Roughly half of the respondents were from Broadview. To watch the meeting in full, click here.

During the Dec. 2 meeting, the village board voted on zoning measures that had already been vetted and unanimously recommended to the board by the Broadview Zoning Board on Oct. 15.

As Village Free Press previously reported, during that October zoning board meeting, David Upshaw, Broadview’s building commissioner and zoning administrator, said that the village’s plan was to limit the number of areas where recreational cannabis dispensaries are allowed to locate in Broadview to two — the Roosevelt Road corridor and Broadview Village Square.

The Broadview Board of Trustees also amended the village’s zoning ordinance map to create an overlay district that would allow for the operation of non-dispensing cannabis business establishments, such as cultivation centers. The overlay district is for the area between 25th Avenue and 17th Avenue to the east and west, and between the railroad tracks and Cermak Avenue to the north and south. The area is currently zoned for office and industrial establishments.
