Sunday, November 20, 2022 || By Michael Romain || @maywoodnews

The race for the village board in Westchester has been heating up over the last month, with at least three political parties formally announcing their bids for open board seats during the April 4, 2023 consolidated election.

Westchester Park District Commissioner Daniel Maldonado, 38, was likely the first person to formally declare his candidacy for village president. Maldonado made a formal announcement on Sept. 16. On Oct. 24, he announced that his full slate will include two trustee candidates: Gia Marie Benline and Victoria Vann.

Another slate, the Westchester Citizens Party, introduced candidates through a series of Facebook posts in October. The party’s village trustee candidates include Kevin Canfield and Peter MarzanoSophia Collins is the party’s candidate for village clerk. Two other people — Marianne Nagl and  Chris Tenuta — announced that they’ll run for seats on the park district board under the Westchester Citizens Party.

Westchester Trustee Tracy Jennings, who announced his run for village president on Nov. 11, formally announced that he’ll run with four other candidates for clerk and trustee under the Public Servant Party of Westchester. Dana Bax is the candidate for clerk while Travis Morris, Vanessa Sanchez and Michael O. Wright are all running for trustee seats.

Candidates have until mid-December to submit petitions. In Westchester, three village board seats, the village clerk’s seat and the village president’s seat will be on the ballot in April 2023.

The village president election is a special election to decide who will carry out the remainder of the late village president Frank Perry’s term. Perry, who was elected in April 2021, died in December, less than a year into his term.
